About
Douglas Hyslop is an American painter currently working in Madison, Wisconsin. With a background in chemistry and philosophy, Hyslop's work draws from a research and writing practice. Exploring themes of love and loss, fatherhood and the existential, Hyslop's work examines the human experience through narrative and symbology. He works with delicate lines in pencil and washes of acrylic that build rich layers of color. Hyslop's paintings hold an aura of the hand that has continuously returned to the canvas over spans of years. They also demonstrate a commitment to both precision and expression: seen through his carefully rendered architectural spaces and bold patterns that house delicate marks and expressive brushstrokes.
His lifetime of painting has been documented and is available here as an archive. Hyslop continues to show his paintings and is actively creating new work in his studio in Madison.
